Major phase of Newcastle retail project opens
St Andrew’s Way - the final element of the £170m redevelopment of Eldon Square Shopping Centre jointly owned by Capital Shopping Centres and Newcastle City Council has opened.
Cundall provided engineering design services for the major redevelopment including structural, civil, transportation, environmental and mechanical and electrical design. The phased project has included the reconfiguration of the existing bus concourse into a new shopping mall in St George’s Way and a new bus station. All work was carried out whilst the centre remained trading.
The final phase which opens this week includes a Debenhams department store and creates an additional 40% trading space, all of which has been fully let. “We originally won the competition and commenced work for the new bus concourse in 2001, so to see the entire project complete after the years of hard work is very rewarding. The project is a testament to what collaborative working between everyone involved can achieve.” says Cundall Partner, Tomas Neeson.
